The full service description
Truck Clinic, truck repair in Romeoville, IL, flow-tests the diesel particulate filter, cleans or replaces it, and finds the upstream fault that loaded it early so the lamp stays off. Shop-based, just off I-55, with a written quote before anything comes apart.
What's included
- Off-truck DPF cleaning with before-and-after flow testing
- Forced regeneration and soot and ash counter reset
- DPF replacement with OE or aftermarket filter options
- DOC and SCR inspection in the same visit
- Upstream cause diagnosis: injectors, turbo seals, EGR, doser
- Aftertreatment sensor, clamp and gasket replacement
Cleaning, regeneration or replacement? Start with the fault
The quote depends on diagnosis, filter condition, removal and installation work, and whether cleaning or replacement is appropriate. Confirm the service scope and expected completion time with the shop before bringing in a truck or an already-removed filter.
What to have ready when you call
- Truck and engine model, mileage and active aftertreatment codes
- When the DPF warning or derate began and how often regeneration occurs
- Previous DPF cleaning or replacement history
- Any oil-consumption, coolant-loss or engine problems reported with the warning

What does a DPF cleaning service at Truck Clinic include?
A diesel particulate filter traps soot, and regeneration burns it off. What regen cannot burn is ash from engine oil (a low-ash CK-4 oil and sensible oil change intervals slow it down), which fills the cells over time and pushes differential pressure up. Ash only comes out with the filter off the truck; a forced regen does not touch it.

A DPF cleaning service here covers the whole exhaust path, not just the can:
- Code and history review. Aftertreatment codes, regen frequency and how long the last few ran.
- Removal and baseline flow test. Inlet face condition and a pre-clean restriction reading to compare against.
- Cleaning. Ash and packed soot removed, then a second flow test, documented.
- DOC and SCR inspection. A face-plugged or poisoned diesel oxidation catalyst will not light off, so regen fails however clean the DPF is.
- Reinstall, reset and verify. Counters reset in the ECM, a regen run and pressure verified.
We do not delete or bypass emissions equipment. These filters exist because of EPA heavy-duty emissions standards, and a deleted truck is a liability at the next roadside inspection.
What symptoms mean the diesel particulate filter is loaded or failing?
The truck usually tells you well before the derate. The pattern is usually the same: regens that used to happen every few days now happen every shift, take longer, and sometimes do not finish before shutdown.

Symptoms that bring trucks into the bay:
- Regen lamp on more often, or a parked-regen request that keeps returning
- A regen that runs a long time and aborts, often followed by the check engine lamp
- Exhaust smell in the cab during regen, which points to a leak upstream of the filter
- Grey or black smoke after a regen, which suggests a cracked substrate
The usual codes are SPN 3251 (DPF differential pressure), SPN 3719 and 3720 (soot and ash load), SPN 3936 (DPF system) and SPN 4364 (SCR efficiency). A code alone does not say whether the filter is full or a pressure line is cracked; that is what the diagnostic work sorts out before anything is ordered.
How do you tell whether a DPF needs cleaning or replacing?
This decision saves or wastes the most money, and it is made with a flow bench and a flashlight, not a guess.

Cleaning is the right call when:
- The substrate is intact, with no cracks, melted cells or missing pieces on either face
- The filter is ash-loaded rather than soaked with oil or coolant
- The post-clean flow test comes back close to baseline
Replacement is the right call when:
- The inlet face is glazed with oil from a turbo seal or coolant from an EGR cooler; cleaning cannot recover a contaminated substrate
- The filter is cracked or melted from an uncontrolled regen, usually traced to a stuck injector or a doser fault
- A cleaned filter still fails the flow test, or the lamp came back within weeks of the last cleaning
The honest trade-off: cleaning a contaminated filter is money spent twice, because it reloads and the second visit includes the replacement anyway. When the call is close we show you the flow numbers and the face and let you decide. Our post on how often to clean a DPF and when to replace it covers the interval side.
What drives DPF cleaning cost and DPF replacement cost?
We do not publish a figure because the same soot lamp can lead to a short cleaning or a full aftertreatment rebuild. What moves the quote:

- Clean or replace. A cleaning that passes the flow test is the cheapest outcome; a replacement filter is the largest single line, and OE versus aftermarket is a real choice, covered in our OE versus aftermarket guide.
- What else is in the box. On newer trucks the DOC, DPF and SCR share one housing. If the DOC is poisoned or the SCR fouled, the scope grows.
- Hardware that breaks on the way out. Rusted V-band clamps, seized flange bolts and brittle pressure lines are normal on a Chicago-winter truck.
- The upstream cause. A dribbling seventh injector or doser, a turbo seal pushing oil or a weeping EGR cooler will load the next filter too, and fixing it may involve our engine repair bay.
Every job starts with a written quote. Nothing is opened, cleaned or ordered until you approve it.
How long does DPF cleaning take, and can I keep driving with the lamp on?
Turnaround depends on whether a bay is open when you arrive, whether the filter passes cleaning or needs a replacement ordered, and whether an upstream repair is part of the job. A straightforward ash cleaning is often a same-day job.

Whether to keep driving depends on the dash:
- Solid DPF lamp, regens still completing. Schedule the cleaning, run highway miles rather than idling in the yard, and do not shut off mid-regen.
- DPF lamp with the check engine lamp, or a regen that will not complete. Get it in this week; the next step is a derate.
- Flashing lamp, power derate or a speed-limit message. Stop adding miles. High soot load risks an uncontrolled regen that melts the substrate and turns a cleaning into a replacement.
If the truck is already in a derate, we diagnose the fault, repair it and then clear the inducement, in that order. Our guide to reading derate codes explains each stage.
Why do I-55 and Will County duty cycles load a DPF early?
The Will County duty cycle is hard on filters. Short hops between Joliet intermodal yards, Bolingbrook distribution centers and Chicago delivery routes mean long idle time and not enough sustained exhaust heat for passive regen, so active regens run more often and cleaning intervals arrive well ahead of the OEM schedule.

For fleets in Romeoville, Bolingbrook, Joliet, Plainfield, Naperville, Aurora and Chicago we record pre-clean and post-clean flow numbers for each truck we clean, so you can see which trucks are loading early and chase the cause instead of cleaning the same filter every few months. That record fits into a fleet maintenance program.
We are a shop, not a roadside service: no mobile regens, no pickup. Bring the truck to 565 Anderson Dr Unit B, Romeoville, IL 60446, Monday to Friday 7 AM to 5 PM or Saturday 7 AM to noon. Call (815) 887-0212 or request a quote online with the engine model and active codes.
Why it matters
- Regen completes and the lamp stays off
- Fewer regens, less fuel burned running them
- No repeat visit for the same filter
- Written quote before the filter comes off

What to expect
- 01
Read active and historic aftertreatment codes and the regen history
- 02
Remove the filter, record inlet face condition and a baseline flow reading
- 03
Clean a sound filter; recommend replacement if it is cracked, melted or oil-soaked
- 04
Post-clean flow test, documented against the baseline

Inspect the DOC face, pressure lines and sensors; replace what has failed
- 06
Reinstall, reset ash and soot counters, run a regen and road-test
Common problems we address
Regen runs every shift and the DPF lamp keeps coming back
Back-to-back regens mean the filter is ash-loaded, something upstream is overfueling, or a pressure sensor is lying. We flow-test the filter and check injectors, turbo seals, the doser and the sensors before anything is cleaned, so the fix holds.
Lamp returned a few weeks after a DPF cleaning somewhere else
A clean filter behind a face-plugged DOC, a cracked differential pressure line or a leaking EGR cooler will relapse fast. We inspect the whole aftertreatment path and the engine-side causes, not just the can.
Derate message with a high exhaust backpressure code
We find and repair the restriction or fault first, then clear the inducement. A reset without the repair puts the truck straight back into derate, and we do not delete or bypass emissions controls.
Your questions, answered
How often should a DPF be cleaned on a semi truck?
Most engine makers publish a cleaning interval in miles or hours, and that is the starting point, not the rule. A truck idling in Joliet yards all day reaches it far sooner than one running the interstate. The earlier signal is regen frequency: when regens become more frequent and take longer, the filter is due whatever the odometer says.
What does DPF cleaning cost compared to DPF replacement?
A cleaning that passes the flow test is the least expensive outcome, and a new filter is the largest single item when the substrate is cracked, melted or oil-soaked. What sits between them is the upstream repair and any sensors, clamps or catalysts that also need work. We give a written quote after diagnosis and nothing is ordered until you approve it.
Can you drive a truck with the DPF light on?
With a solid lamp and regens still completing, you can drive to a scheduled cleaning; favor highway miles and avoid shutting down mid-regen. A flashing lamp, a check engine lamp alongside it, or any derate message means stop adding miles, because the next stage is an uncontrolled regen or a speed limit.
Is a forced regen the same as DPF cleaning?
No. A forced regen raises exhaust temperature to burn soot, and it is the right fix when soot is the problem. It cannot remove ash, which only comes out with the filter off the truck. If a forced regen fails or the lamp returns within days, the filter needs cleaning or something upstream needs repair.
Can I get a forced regen near Romeoville without a full DPF cleaning?
Yes. We run forced regens in the shop at 565 Anderson Dr Unit B, after a quick check of why the passive regen failed, because forcing a regen on a filter already at high soot load can crack it. We are shop-based only, so the truck has to come to us; there is no roadside or mobile regen.
When does a DPF have to be replaced instead of cleaned?
When the substrate is cracked or melted, when the inlet face is glazed with oil or coolant, or when a cleaned filter still fails the flow test. Cleaning a contaminated filter buys a little time before it reloads. We show you the face and the flow numbers before recommending a replacement.
