A 5 mph derate reset only holds if the fault that started the inducement is gone.
The full service description
Truck Clinic, truck repair in Romeoville, IL, finds the DEF, SCR, NOx sensor or DPF problem behind the engine derate, repairs it, clears the inducement and proves it with a drive cycle before the truck leaves. We do not delete or bypass emissions systems.
What's included
- Inducement status and derate history readout
- DEF level, quality and tank heater testing
- NOx sensor, doser and SCR efficiency diagnosis
- DPF soot load and regen history review
- Inducement cleared with the service tool after repair
- Drive cycle, SCR relearn and live NOx verification
What does a 5 mph derate reset at Truck Clinic actually involve?
A 5 mph derate reset is not a button. The ECM caps speed because an emissions fault ran out its inducement timer, and the only reset that holds comes after that fault is fixed. At our Romeoville, IL shop a derate visit covers:
Read the full section
- Reading the inducement: which fault started it (DEF level, DEF quality, SCR efficiency, tampering detection, DPF), how long ago and how many times before.
- Diagnosing the cause: DEF concentration and contamination, tank heater and level sender, doser spray, NOx in and out, DPF soot load.
- Repairing it: the sensor, doser, harness, DEF flush or DPF cleaning the finding calls for, quoted in writing first.
- Clearing and proving it: the service tool reset, then the drive cycle or SCR relearn at temperature with live NOx data before the keys come back.
We do not perform DPF or SCR deletes, tune out inducements or install bypass devices. Tampering with heavy-duty emissions controls is prohibited under EPA rules, and a deleted truck will not pass an OBD-based check.
Why is the truck stuck at 5 mph, and what happened before that?
Engine derate is a ladder, and 5 mph is the bottom rung. Each OEM publishes its own schedule, but the shape is the same:
Read the full section
| Stage | What the driver sees | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Lamp only | Check engine or DEF lamp, no power loss | A monitor failed or DEF is low; the timer may be running |
| Torque derate | Power cut, still reaches highway speed | Timer counting down across drive cycles |
| Speed limit | Truck caps at a low road speed | Final warning on most schedules |
| 5 mph | Truck creeps; cannot leave the yard | Timer expired; repair and reset required |
The timer does not care whether the lamp was noticed; a week of running with an active DEF quality fault can drop two rungs. Clearing the code without a repair does not restart the timer on every platform; some carry the count forward, so a truck reset last month can be back at 5 mph in days. Our guide to engine derate codes and stages covers the common code families.
DEF derate, SCR derate or DPF derate: how do you tell which one you have?
The lamp looks the same, but the fault families behind an engine derate are diagnosed differently:
Read the full section
| Derate family | Common triggers | First tests |
|---|---|---|
| DEF derate | Empty tank, bad level sender, diluted or contaminated fluid, frozen DEF, failed tank heater | Refractometer on the fluid, heater and sender test, water or diesel in the tank |
| SCR derate | NOx conversion below threshold: dead or slow NOx sensor, doser not spraying or crystallized, poisoned or aged catalyst | NOx in versus out on live data, doser spray test, DEF quality first |
| DPF or EGR derate | Soot load past limit, failed regens, differential pressure sensor, EGR flow fault | Soot load and pressure readings, regen history, EGR flow test |
Order matters: contaminated DEF poisons the SCR catalyst if the truck keeps running, and an SCR derate is often a DEF quality problem in disguise, so we confirm the fluid before condemning a sensor or catalyst. If the fault comes and goes, truck diagnostics covers intermittent aftertreatment faults.
How do you clear a derate so it stays cleared?
How to clear a derate so it holds comes down to a sequence:
Read the full section
- Read before you touch. Inducement status, active and stored codes, occurrence counts and freeze frame tell you whether this is the first trip or the fourth.
- Fix the fault the inducement names. Flush contaminated DEF, replace the failed NOx sensor or doser, repair the harness, clean the DPF. One repair per cause; do not stack parts.
- Verify with data, not the lamp. NOx out should fall well below NOx in at operating temperature, the doser should spray a clean cone, and DEF should read in spec.
- Clear the inducement with the service tool. Some ECMs release the derate once the monitor passes; others hold it until a technician resets it.
- Run the relearn and the drive cycle. SCR efficiency monitors run only at temperature and under load, so a lap around the lot proves nothing.
- Confirm no pending code. A pending fault that has not matured is the next derate waiting.
Skipping step 3 or 5 is how a truck ends up back at 5 mph on I-55 a week later. Our guide to DEF system problems covers the doser and NOx sensor tests.
What determines the cost of a derate repair?
There is no flat price for a derate reset, because the reset is the last step of a repair sized by the fault:
Read the full section
- Sensor, doser or catalyst. A NOx sensor or a doser is a component swap. A poisoned SCR catalyst or a DPF past cleaning is a different order of job.
- What the DEF did on the way. Contaminated fluid means a tank flush, lines, a filter and often the doser. Diesel in the DEF tank is worse than water.
- OE or aftermarket sensors. Aftermarket NOx sensors exist; some read fine, some set the same code again. We tell you which we would put on our own truck.
How long does a 5 mph derate reset take?
Turnaround is set by whether the cause is a component or contamination, whether the part is on hand, and how long the ECM needs to re-run its monitors. A NOx sensor or DEF level sender with the part on the shelf can be same-day when a bay is open.

A DEF flush, a doser and an SCR relearn take longer because the system has to be brought to temperature and driven; a catalyst or DPF replacement is paced by parts. Two things we will not do to save time: clear the inducement before the repair is verified, or skip the road test.
Should you drive a derated truck to the shop, or have it towed?
A torque derate that still allows highway speed can usually be driven to Romeoville from Joliet, Bolingbrook, Plainfield or the Chicago metro; call first and we will say whether the countdown leaves time. A truck already at the speed-limit stage should come on a trailer: 5 mph on the I-55 shoulder is a hazard.

We do not offer roadside derate resets or mobile service; a reset done in a parking lot without the repair is the reset that fails. Fleets running west should know California's Truck and Bus Regulation applies to out-of-state trucks, so an active aftertreatment fault is a compliance problem there too; our guide to CARB compliance for Illinois fleets covers what inspectors check.
Call (815) 887-0212 with the codes and how long the lamp has been on, or send the details through the contact page, and we will schedule the truck.
Why it matters
- The fault behind the derate fixed, not just the code cleared
- No deletes, tunes or bypass devices
- Written quote before parts are ordered
- Road-tested at temperature before the truck leaves

- 02
Test DEF concentration and contamination, tank heater, level sender and doser spray
- 03
Compare NOx in and out on live data and check DPF soot load and regen history

Repair, then clear the inducement with the service tool
- 06
Drive cycle and SCR relearn at temperature, then confirm no active or pending code
Common problems we address
NOx sensor code and a derate countdown
We compare inlet and outlet NOx on live data and test the doser before replacing the sensor, because an outlet reading that is genuinely high will set the same code on a new sensor.
DEF quality fault after a top-off
We check the fluid with a refractometer and look for water, diesel or coolant in the tank; contaminated DEF gets a flush, a new filter and a doser inspection, not just a code clear.
SCR efficiency low with DEF in spec
We test doser spray, exhaust temperature and NOx sensor response to find whether the catalyst is starved, cold or aged before condemning it.
Your questions, answered
What does a 5 mph derate mean on a semi truck?
It is the final stage of an emissions inducement. An aftertreatment fault such as low or bad DEF, a failed NOx sensor or low SCR efficiency stayed active long enough for the ECM's timer to run out, so the engine caps road speed at 5 mph. The truck needs the fault repaired and the inducement cleared before it will run normally.
Can a 5 mph derate be reset without fixing the problem?
Sometimes the code will clear, but the ECM re-runs the monitor on the next drive cycle, sees the same fault and starts the countdown again, often with less time on it. Some platforms carry the inducement count forward across resets. We do not clear an inducement until the fault behind it is repaired and verified.
What is the difference between an engine derate and a 5 mph derate?
Engine derate is the whole family: the ECM cutting torque or speed over an unrepaired fault. It starts as a lamp, becomes a torque cut, then a speed limit, and finishes at 5 mph. A 5 mph derate is the last rung, where the inducement timer has expired and the truck cannot leave the yard under its own power.
Does Truck Clinic delete or bypass the DEF system to stop derates?
No. We do not perform DPF or SCR deletes, tune out inducements or install bypass devices. Tampering with heavy-duty emissions controls is prohibited under federal rules, and a deleted truck will not pass an OBD-based emissions check. We repair the fault and clear the inducement the way the ECM expects.
Why did my truck derate again a week after a reset?
Usually because the reset happened before the fault was fixed, a pending code was left behind, or contaminated DEF was topped off rather than flushed and has since poisoned the SCR catalyst. Repeat derates also get shorter timers on some platforms. We read the inducement history first so the second visit is the last one.
Can I drive a derated truck to Romeoville from Joliet or Chicago?
If the truck is in a torque derate and still reaches highway speed, usually yes; call (815) 887-0212 first and we will tell you whether the countdown leaves enough time. If it is already at the speed-limit or 5 mph stage, have it towed. We do not offer roadside or mobile derate resets.
